Extension
Meta-owned WhatsApp first introduced the delete feature for sent messages in 2017 with a strict time limit of eight minutes. It was later extended to 1.14 hours. There have been speculations since last year that the company will extend the time further to as long as three weeks. But, technology blog, Android Police reports that the change is being delayed because of hesitations about the proposed length of the extension.
WABetaInfo believes WhatsApp may be increasing the time limit to for deleting sent messages to 60 hours - 2 days and 12 hours.
When?
WhatsApp has gained a reputation for taking its sweet time in rolling out new features onto developmental stages, but industry watchers are confident the extension of the delete period could come into effect sooner rather than later.
It will be in the company’s interest to see it through if it wants an edge over major competitor, Telegram which lets users delete sent messages within 48 hours. According to Android Police:
There's no indicator in the WhatsApp beta to notify you about the increased limit. You'll need to just try it for yourself by sending a message to a group and then attempt to delete it after a couple of days
