Xylitol is a natural sweetener that is often found in chewing gum and toothpaste. Whilst it's as sweet as sugar, it contains fewer calories and does not raise blood sugar levels. Unlike normal sugar it cannot be used as an energy source for bacteria and it’s less acidic so it won’t damage tooth enamel.

Some studies have even found that it could help prevent cavities, although the evidence is not conclusive. For this reason, many dentists recommend chewing gum that contains xylitol. However, you definitely shouldn't use that as an excuse not to brush your teeth! And you should know that possible side effects of consuming too much xylitol can include bloating and diarrhea.
