What are ingrown hairs?
In order to find out what the best methods to dealing and preventing ingrown hairs from happening to us, we must first understand why and how they come to be. Plainly put, you get ingrown hairs when your hair grows back into the skin instead of up to the surface. It can happen when hair has been shaved, waxed, or plucked.
Though more often than not ingrown hairs clear up on their own after some time, in really bad cases, they can develop an infection which in turn will require a trip to your dermatologist.
Three home remedies to try
So, what are some of the best home remedies to get rid of pesky ingrown hairs?
- The first home remedy to try involves using tea tree oil as it is known for its highly effective anti-bacterial and inflammatory properties. It is sometimes used to treat acne and has been known to be a solution for getting rid of ingrown hairs. Mix the oil with water to dilute it and gently apply using a cotton ball.
- Make your own natural exfoliator using something like sugar or even coffee grounds. The former is great to mix in with olive oil or honey to moisturize the skin and kill bacteria. Once the sweet concoction has been made, apply the paste in a circular motion, and then rinse with warm water.
- Another DIY exfoliator to use as a treatment against ingrown hairs is baking soda. Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with one cup of water and with the help of a cotton ball, apply to the affected area and then rinse with cold water.
