Revenge Porn is illegal. But it doesn't appear to stop people from doing it every day and destroying the mental health, reputations and careers of their victims. A survey carried out by the French Instute of Public Opinion (IFOP) and relayed by Lemon (a company that helps you choose the best phone and Internet deals) shows the proportion of people who have resorted to this despicable technique of denigration. What is Revenge Porn?
According to the UK governement, Revenge Porn can be described as such:
Revenge Porn is the sharing of private, sexual materials, either photos or videos, of another person without their consent and with the purpose of causing embarrassment or distress.
Its worst cases involve accompanying the images 'by personal information about the subject, including their full name, address and links to their social media profiles.'
The governement specifies that what qualifies as Revenge Porn is the sharing 'both online and offline' of 'private and sexual' images.
The study
Published on November 6, 2023, the survey focuses on 'dealing with exes on social networks'. A thousand young people aged between 15 and 34 were asked about their relationships with their former loves on Instagram, Snapchat and the like.
Are they capable of remaining friends once the relationship is over? The answer is mostly yes. Is the ex a source of conflict with the new partner? Again, the answer is yes, but women are less likely to accept their partner's exchanges with an ex. The survey is a mine of information, which ends on a sombre note: denigration and revenge porn.
Men (much) more into revenge porn than women
After a relationship, men are more likely to share photos of their ex than women, according to the survey. Lemon details:
40% of the young men questioned by IFOP said they had already denigrated an ex-girlfriend in this way to damage her reputation, an attitude shared by 14% of young women.
Worse still, almost 4 men in 10 (38%) say they have sent intimate photos of their ex to other people, an illegal form of revenge porn in which 14% of women also admit to having engaged."
As a reminder, Revenge Porn is punishable by law. Sharing or threatening to share images, videos or comments of a sexual nature, without the consent of the perpetrator, is punishable by 2 years' imprisonment and a fine.
