Speak for your partner
The research studied 100 couples who had been together for up to 24 years and came to the conclusion that it’s essential to speak your partner’s love language. The participants of the study were aged from 17 to 58 years and they completed a questionnaire that was developed on prior research on the topic.
After thoroughly analysing the participants' love language, their relationships and survey answer the results that came out were intriguing. The couple who had better relationships were the ones who used their partner’s love language to express love than sticking to their own. Researcher Olha Mostova from the University of Warsaw in Poland confirmed:
People differ both in the ways they express affection and the ways they wish to receive it.
As such receiving love in your own love language rather than adjusting to your partner’s gives better results than expected.
What are the love languages?
Mostova insisted that most people are familiarised with the term love languages, however, the concept of it is still ‘relatively under-explored.’ Love language is how you’re conditioned to give and receive love. There are five distinct love languages:
Words of affirmation
The language acknowledges the verbal acknowledgement of affection like constant reminders of love, encouragement and reassurance.
Spending quality time together
People who speak this language feel the most loved when they spend time with their partners.
Gift-giving
‘I looked at it and thought of you, so I got this for you’ is basically the idea behind this love language. Expressing love through gifts is sometimes essential.
Acts of service
This language is going out of your way to make someone feel special and loved.
Physical touch
These people adore kissing, hugging, cuddling, holding hands or sex as the ultimate sign and confirmation of love.
