Is therapy the new dating dealbreaker?

The days of whispered discussions about therapy are long gone, and in 2022 therapy is taking centre stage in relationships in a whole new way. Relationship expert Ness Cooper at Lovehoney believes this is the new trend coming this winter.

According to research undertaken by dating app Hinge, 88% of their users prefer to date someone who is actively going to therapy, and 97% of users prefer dating someone who intentionally takes care of their mental health.

So, is going to therapy about to become a relationship dealbreaker?

Why do they work?

The benefits of therapy for individuals are undeniable. But according to Hinge's research, therapy goers are also having better relationships. So much so that therapy is now on many people's dating checklists. This is because, as Hypebae notes Hinge’s Director of Relationship Science Logan Ury states, 'people want to find someone who’s ‘done the work'...and with whom they canconnect in a deeper, more authentic way.'

Why is this trend rising?

With all the time we've had on our hands to reflect thanks to the Covid 19 pandemic, 2022 has bred a new type of dater. By working on their mental health and personal growth, many individuals are now entering into relationships with a much clearer sense, and unabashed desire to communicate their wants and needs in a relationship.

Coming from both partners, this behaviour can lead to healthier relationships where growth (on a personal and relationship level) is prioritised over avoiding uncomfortable conversations.

In fact, many Hinge users noted that they would in fact be less inclined to pursue a new relationship if their date showed an aversion to going to therapy.

To put it another way, for this new group of daters, respecting their own mental health is no longer enough; it's equally critical to date someone who shares this value!
